Project goal
The goal of the project is to help Laura’s family acquire bandages, such as special plasters that protect the skin and antiseptic creams and gels that are sold over the counter. As it’s a congenital disorder, it cannot be cured, but the goal of continuous treatment is to prevent complications that could cause disabilities.
The duration of the project
July 2011 to December 2012
Detailed introduction
Laura is suffering from a form of severe generalized recessive and hereditary dystrophic epidermolysis. It is a rare disorder, which causes differently sized blisters appear on Laura’s skin. If the blisters break or pop, the resulting erosions heal slowly and cause pain. Laura’s skin is very sensitive and can be damaged by even the smallest trauma or friction. If the blisters keep appearing at the same places, it promotes scarring and contractions which can affect the motion of different body parts. Due to the constantly appearing blisters, there’s a risk of secondary infections.
This given form of the disorder can also make painful blisters and erosions appear on the oral mucosa, due to which Laura has difficulties eating and there are damages to the mucosa of the esophagus. To prevent gastro-oesophageal reflux, Laura has to receive lifelong treatment, but unfortunately the necessary medicine is not availbale in Estonia right now and it is being ordered from abroad.
Project cost
The Children’s Fund is supporting Laura’s family with the purchase of necessary supplies with up to 250 euros per month.

Latest information
Thanks to the Children’s Fund’s support so far, Laura’s skin condition was much better in the summer, although the heat made even more blisters appear than normally. Since Laura’s family was able to change the plasters and bandages more often, they didn’t stick to her skin, which, in turn, would have traumatized the skin and cause new blisters to appear.
Thanks to the Children’s Fund’s support, they can also buy suitable care supplies and creams that ease Laura’s difficulties.
