Detailed introduction

In cooperation with FDN Tartu University Hospital’s Children’s Fund, Selver organized a campaign “It’s easier together”, where in all Tartu’s Selver stores, people could donate for the central fetal monitoring system.

Being born is one of the biggest challenges in a person’s life. At birth, the child must adjust to a completely new environment. The child must be able to start breathing on his own and provide himself with nutrients. If a secure and well-monitored birth can be provided, the newborn will excel at physiological adaption.

Monitoring the condition of the fetus during giving birth is very important and over time, we have started to understand better how different fetuses can react to birth stress. Understanding birth stress allows us to intervene in time, before the risk of permanent damages. Monitoring the heart activity of the fetus is the main information we need to ensure a safe birth.

The central fetal monitoring system allows:

1. Monitoring the condition of the mother and fetus during birth at the best possible level, helping to estimate the condition of the newborn and the effectiveness of the contractions of the uterus, thereby avoiding unnecessary interventions.

2. Adequately assess the need for assistance and to respond promptly to prevent serious health damages resulting from the lack of oxygen to the fetus.

3. To prevent unnecessary surgical interventions to the course of delivery based on the data received from the system.

4. If necessary, monitor several fetuses or women in labor (we estimate, that the maximum amount of monitored fetuses is 9). If necessary, information can be displayed on one screen, which allows to get an overview of everything happening in the department.

Project cost

The system costs ~60 000 euros, of which 50% will be covered by the Tartu University Hospital and the other 50% by the Tartu University Hospital’s Children’s Fund.
